A detail is five stages, and they only work in this order.
Wax on a contaminated panel seals the contamination in. Wheels done last put brake dust back onto clean paint. The shelves on this site are arranged the way the work actually happens.

Decontaminate, then protect
Most dull paint is not worn out. It is contaminated.
Rail dust, overspray and bonded fallout sit proud of the clear coat and scatter light, which reads as dull. Clay shears it off and wax puts a level surface back on top. Drag the handle to see the difference decontamination makes on the same panel.
Clay, iron removers and hand polish can scratch or dull paint if used incorrectly. Always test on a small, inconspicuous area first, keep the surface fully lubricated, and never fit hand polish to a machine. Read the full safety notes.

The method everything is built around
Two buckets. The grit stays at the bottom.
Swirl marks almost never come from the shampoo. They come from grit picked up on the first panel and dragged across every panel after it. One bucket holds the shampoo solution, the other holds plain rinse water with a guard at the bottom. The mitt goes back into the rinse bucket after every panel, and what it releases stays down there.
- Wheels first, with their own bucket, brushes and chemistry.
- Pre-rinse, then foam, then dwell — take off what you can without touching.
- Top down, straight lines, no circles. Rinse the mitt every panel.
- Sheet the water off with an open flow, then dry before it dries itself.

- Dilute exactly to the label. Never mix products.

Wash water runoff is regulated in many US states and municipalities, and discharge into a storm drain may be prohibited where you live. Wash on grass or gravel, or use a containment mat, and check your local rules before you start.
